Shang Palace at Shangri-La Hotel Guilin

Shang Palace is the premier Chinese restaurant of Shangri-La Hotel Guilin featuring fine Cantonese, Hunanese, Chuanese and Guilin cuisines prepared by the restaurant's well-experienced culinary team led by Master Chef Gordon Sun. Dishes are made with healthy ingredients and prepared using traditional Chinese cooking techniques.

During my recent trip to Guilin, China, I stayed the the beautiful Shangri-La Hotel Guilin and had the chance to dine at Shang Palace. Although Guilin is no longer part of Guangdong province, the Cantonese Cuisine served here at Shangri-La Hotel Guilin's Shang Palace was exceptional. It was lunchtime of Friday when we dined at Shang Palace and the restaurant was almost full.

steamed pork ribs

steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow)

steamed red rice rolls with shrimp

congee with century egg

steamed rice noodle rolls (chang fen)

Macau-style roast pork belly

roast duck

mango sago with pomelo

We sampled some of their dimsum and I was super impressed by their steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow). The shrimps tasted really fresh and had a sweet aftertaste. The Macau-style roast pork belly was very crispy and the fats melts as you bite on every chunk of it. The roast duck was very tasty and juicy, and the meat was very tender. Lastly, we had a refreshing dessert of mango sago with pomelo.

Aside from Cantonese cuisine, Shang Palace also served other regional Chinese cuisine including some of Guilin's specialty dishes. They say, you should never leave Guilin without trying the Guilin Rice Noodles (桂林米粉 / Guìlín MǐFěn). It is a rice noodle dish with a light gravy or broth mixed with herbs and aromatics. The dish is then topped with slices of meat and sprinkled with chopped scallions and peanuts. A serving of chili and pickled cowpea comes with the dish. I personally prefer to add a little chili to the dish to bring out more of its faint flavors.

Shang Palace has a spacious dining hall on the ground floor which is perfect for small groups of two to six persons. They can also set-up tables for bigger groups at the main dining hall, but for bigger groups of guests who prefer a more intimate dining experience, they can book any of the private dining rooms located on the second floor of the restaurant.
