Let's Have Coffee in Roxas City

ROXAS CITY, Capiz - It was a quiet Sunday evening and we suddenly craved for coffee...a nice cup of warm latte. Good thing a friend recommended a coffee shop in Roxas City, ACC Coffee & Crêpe.

From our hotel, we hailed a trike and told the driver to bring us to ACC. It was already 8:30pm and we were worried that ACC might be closing early that evening, especially it was a Sunday. Fortunately, ACC won't be closed until 10:00pm.

From ACC's menu, we immediately browsed through their coffee selection and ordered our usual caffe latte.  It didn't take long for our coffee to be served and we were even surprised to find latte art on our cup. This cup of latte was definitely made with passion. When we finally had our first sip, we were 100% sure that ACC uses top quality coffee beans. Being coffee lovers, you have to take our word that ACC serves one of the best caffe lattes in the whole country.

ACC experience wouldn't be complete without sampling their crepes! ACC offers two types of crepes: savory crepes & dessert crepes. Savory Crepes are basically crepes with meat filling/topping. Served with salad, they are good enough as a meal. Dessert Crepes, on the other hand, are on the sweeter side, with fruit and chocolate as filling. One of ACC's bestselling dessert crepes is Mango Bliss. This crepe is filled with perfectly ripe mango slices and topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. Yummy!

How it all started

Dr. Victor Federico "Pip" Acepcion, a Roxas City-based urologist, faced a problem when his clinic, which he also shared with his sister, could no longer fit the ever growing number of visiting patients at their receiving area. In March 2011, he decided to open a creperia beside his clinic to provide a comfortable waiting area for his visiting patients. His crepes and coffee instantly became a hit to the locals that he had to move his clinic to a new location to accommodate his cafe's expansion. ACC is now a favorite hangout place for young professionals, students and families in Roxas City.

When you have passion with what you do

There is no doubt that Dr. Acepcion is passionate about coffee and crepes. Aside from being a fulltime urologist, he is also involved in the daily operations of ACC. When he is around, he takes over as the barista.

Did you know that coffee can aid digestion? After a day of feasting on seafood in Roxas City (the Seafood Capital of the Philippines), drop by ACC and try their coffee and crepes. You, just like us, could be lucky to sample Dr. Acepcion's coffee creations

Iloilo City: Breakfast at Madge Café

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo - We always wanted to try Magde Café during our past visits to Iloilo City but never had the chance due to time constraints. Finally this time, we were able to drop by in this coffee shop inside the La Paz Public Market. Yes, you heard it right, is it inside a public market. Here, they don't sell ambiance, there's no aircon, no fancy furniture, no cozy lighting, no classy music. They sell coffee.

In a modern world dominated by coffee machines, espresso machines and instant coffee, it will be a feast in your eyes how they prepare their coffee, the traditional way. When ordering coffee, you will be asked how you want your coffee. This is because they have three coffee intensities: mild, regular and strong (may be served black or with milk).

We ordered the strong blend with milk (Php25.00) and suman for breakfast. The first sip of this Ilonggo coffee was pure heaven. It is definitely arabica, with earthy tones, but the overall flavor is very unique which I couldn't compare with the other coffee variants I tasted before. According to the owner, Mr. Peter de la Cruz, they source their Arabica coffee beans from the highlands of Iloilo as well as from Guimaras Island.

As you drink your coffee, you will notice a constant stream of customers coming in. Some even bring their own cups, probably owners or workers from the nearby market stalls. The patrons would simply seat on their favorite spot, reading the newspaper while waiting for their "usual" coffee served in a cup personalized with the patron's name.

Madge Cafe is located inside the La Paz Public Market. The entrance to the market is right in front of the Grand Dame Hotel. From the entrance, turn right on the second alley. Madge Cafe has been here for decades and is here to stay, says the owner. So if you have the chance to visit Iloilo City, do drop by Madge Cafe for a truly Ilonggo coffee experience.

Tarlac City: Starbucks Luisita

After our lunch at Isdaan in Gerona, we were supposed to visit the Aquino Center. Unfortunately, the museum closes at 2:00pm on Sundays. Before heading back to Manila, we stopped by Starbucks Luisita for a much needed dose of coffee.

The baristas instantly noticed that we were from out of town. Coincidentally, one of the baristas used to work at a Starbucks branch in Ortigas Center, Pasig City (my hometown). What a small world. They also served free samples of the Black Sesame Green Tea Cream Frappuccino. Yum-yum!
